Claire was kneeling at the edge of the water, head bowed, the rising sun reflecting shades of copper off her dark hair. The sleeves of her threadbare shirt were rolled up, past her elbows, and the breeches she wore were rolled up as well, past her knees. Her fingertips skimmed the surface of the running water, looking down into it like she was gazing upon her own tired reflection, but instead her hands dipped into the water, scooping it out. Words began to spring from her lips, quiet but clearly lyrical, a song from her own language. The song flowed out from her as she moved in a practiced motion with the water, pouring water on her feet and cleaning them, followed by her hands and arms. Soon it was clear, when Claire tilted her head back and poured the water over her head that this was some kind of prayer. A smile came over her face as she pushed her fingers back through her hair, soaking it through with water as the song on her lips faded. A pinkish sun was beginning to lift over the trees and she lifted her hand to shield her eyes from the glint of the sun, smiling into the distance.
In these past few days she’d been given a reason once again to look forward to a new day. She couldn’t quite place the feeling other than hope and a renewed sense of purpose as she rose from the water’s edge, turning her back to the river and walking up the short grassy slope to her cabin. As she opened the door she looked around to her little house, where her new guest was staying, her little place in a different sort of disarray that she was used to. The introduction of a living, breathing Core into her life was… different. A good different. On a surface level she enjoyed the company- it got very lonely living in a place like this. And Core was good company. He could make her laugh.
She crossed the room to the small hearth, moving aside a pile of collected weapons, before she moved a collected pot of water over the fire glowing in the hearth. Reaching up she plucked at strange hanging dried herbs and tossed them into the water, letting the small cottage fill with a spicy sort of smell. Claire had no idea if Core was even home- the man had his own adventures at night that she couldn’t not object to. He was a grown man and she could not tell him what he could and could not do, especially with his new body. She found herself worrying at times though, but that was something she could fix at least. So she sat at the edge of the hearth, dark hair still slicked back and wet, waiting as the pot boiled.
