Beasts & Creatures of Nova
To the Reader:
Large, small, magical non magical; Nova is home to a vast array of life. I have only been in this time for a year; but I have already come across numerous species. I thought maybe it was about time that I share my experiences with you, the reader. As Time goes on I am more than sure to encounter new species; as I do I’ll make sure to put out new additions of this book.
This book is split up into different categories, in those categories are more categories, I freaking love categories. Anyways it will be split up into three sections; beasts found in Nova, beasts found in Palico, and finally beasts found in Kanto. In these sections the animals will be split up into Land, Air, and Aquatic animals. I will give you my personal experience with this animal and some of the things I’ve learned about it. I will also inform my dear readers how dangerous said animal can be. I implore my readers, please do not just go running up to one of the beasts you find in this book. You very well could become whatever it maybe’s lunch.
I will also cover creatures in this book; creatures can be animals with more humanoid aspects, ore something altogether different. These creatures are just as if not more dangerous than the beasts. Creatures can include things such as fairies, merfolk, dragons*, centaurs, ect.
*Dragons are included in this least because they have a higher range of intelligence rivaling most humanoid species. A whole different book will be written covering just dragons alone.
Happy Reading!

Beasts found in Nova
Beasts in Nova can vary greatly do to its large and vast ranges of ecosystems. At the norther most tip of Nova you have a very mountainous almost artic environment. As you travel further south it slowly warms up to tropical temperatures at its mouth southern tip. As one can imagine Nova probably has the largest variety of animal species within its borders.
Land:
Ashenspark: Aggression lvl 3- Neutral
Ashensparks: Ashensparks are small fire elemental lizards that are the direct by product of magically made fires. If a magical fire is left burning to long these little lizards will crawl out of the ashes. Their lifespans are short lasting a little over three hours; however they pack in a life time’s worth of trouble for the irresponsible magic user. These lizards are fast; often darting from fires and finding a nice dark nook to hide in. Here they will lay bright fiery red eggs; that will set anything around ablaze within five minutes of being laid. These little guys have been known to burn houses, even entire forests! The eggs can be neutralized with a simple freezing spell and are often a valued ingredient for love potions.
Personally I find these little guys adorable; however cuteness can only go so far. I first encountered these guys when I was seventeen; I got lazy and started lighting my campfires magically. I learned the hard way leaving a magical fire burning overnight, extremely poor decision. I ended up setting a whole section of the forever forest on fire; to which I had to personally put out and replant all the trees one by one …took me months to clean up that mess. So lesson to my readers WATCH YOUR FIRES! Else you’ll have to catch these annoyingly fast creatures.
Basilisk: Aggression Lvl- 7- This is a Predator.
Basilisk: This creature is the king of snakes and usually asleep underground until a full moon, when it comes out it will kill as much as possible. It avoids eye contact with its prey and its self since any living creature that makes eye contact with it will be frozen in solid stone. This can also be used against it People in areas like the farm lands often have to leave food at their front doors to avoid being attacked by it. Thankfully it has been over a year since a basilisk was last spotted. If you are frozen by its gaze your statue form must make contact with its blood in order to be free from your stone form.
Elemental Fox: Aggression lvl- 3
Elemental Fox: The Elemental Fox is a strikingly beautiful creature, each one’s coat and tail patterned according to the Element they were born with. There are at least five known species of the Elemental Fox: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, and Metal. Elemental Foxes are normally non-aggressive and tend to run at the sight of danger. They are proficient at concealing themselves and will often play tricks on travelers that are not careful or lost. Elemental foxes are strongly protective of their young until they reach one year in age, at which time they will drive off their young, causing them to seek their own den. Elemental Foxes can manipulate their chosen element to a minor extent, but can easily become Manna Corrupted if they overexert themselves.
Forever Forest Caribou: Aggression lvl- 2 will defend its territory.
Forever Forest Caribou: These creatures like their non-forest cousins, are herbivores. Both sex’s sport a large set of antlers; however the females rack is slightly smaller than the males. The main difference between these two animals are the size, and the mana fused antlers and hooves. The antlers when they come in contact with the ground will grow plants in the places it scratches. Small plants are often growing on the horns as well. There hooves also have the same effect; now the growth is nothing to rapid but they are known as the great planters of the forest. Where they walk new life is sprung into existence. Once the beast is killed this effect no longer takes place. These beasts are few and often solitary.
Forever Fawn: Aggression lvl 0
Forever Fawn: The Forever Fawn are gentle, nimble giants. They are a social, herbivorous species and prefer to travel in large numbers for safety against predators while foraging. They have no antlers and average around 6 to 7 feet in height for an adult. Most of the Forever Fawn’s coats are dark in color, with fur bearing either a sage green or oak gray mixture; their hides often are covered in moss and small leafy foliage. The Forever Fawn are skittish creatures that can move swiftly through the forest by jumping between tree trunks with long, muscular legs and slender three-toed hooves. They communicate with one another by clicks and chirps, and can signal other Forever Fawn at surprising distances. A female Forever Fawn will birth up to two calves at a time, though normally only one survives to adulthood.
Gorge Hound: Aggression lvl 7
Gorge Hounds: Gorge hounds evolved from dire wolves which inhabited mana gorge. Hence the name gorge hound. These beasts mutated to survive the dangerous mana filled gorge. There long snouts specifically designed to track and smell out mana; and extremely large sensitive ears that allow them not to only locate prey but to hear small changes such as a mana vent opening up. The sensitive of their ears are not only due to their large size but also magically enhanced giving these creatures the strongest sense of hearing in the animal kingdom. Gorge hounds stand about 6 ft at the shoulder, and often have long snouts and over sized triangular ears. These hounds have another unique ability being that if you look into a gorge hound eyes you are stricken with the illusion of your death. Gorge hounds often use this in order to subdue prey.
Manticore: Aggression lvl 10 – Highly aggressive and extremely hard to kill.
Manticore: Manticores are roughly the size of a rhino and have a body of a red lion, the back feet of a goat, and a tail like a scorpion. They naturally hostile and territorial, the only time two are in the same place is during mating season. During this time they are primarily concerned with raising their young as fast as possible; so it may be the only time they are not out hunting. Normally they will attack anything on sight. Not to eat but simply for the pleasure of killing, their main diet being deer meat and bark...actually it’s their only diet. But that won’t stop them from ripping you to shreds, its good therapy for them. The tails of these creatures are loaded with very potent Venom usually killing in 20 to 30 minutes. The antidote being a mixture of Peryton blood, Selkie milk, and Kantonese Star Kelp.
Mimic: Aggression lvl 9
Mimic: Mimics are solitary creatures that are thought to have been created by a bad attempt at alchemists trying to give life to an inanimate object. Overtime these creatures have evolved to be able to take the form of manmade inanimate objects. The creatures can vary in size, however they cannot make themselves smaller or larger than they actually are. They can range from the size of a small book to a house. The creatures are mainly nocturnal coming out at night or if their location is consistently dark they are active for however long they feel like it. Mimics are able to coat themselves with a sticky substance that acts as a glue; only a solvent or the mimics death can unstick an unlucky victim. Mimics usually move slowly however when going for a kill they will slam into their victim with great force often dazing the victim. A mimic can come in all different forms; however if one listens closely they will be able to hear a subtle heartbeat.
Novite: Aggression lvl 9 – very dangerous
Novite: Large spiders the size of dinner plates, well spider like, they have all the parts but instead of mandibles they have large mouths that take up the full size of their bodies. These mouths are filled with shark like teeth meant for shredding flesh. Primarily found in the forever forest and manna gorge these fearsome beasts live in large hive like swarms. They burrow underground in small tunnels. They are carnivorous and will strip an animal of its flesh within minutes. The best way to spot these beasts are their thin almost invisible webs that line the forests floor; almost unnoticeable in daylight, but at night they give off an eerie glow. *Side note: Basilisks are their natural predator….LOVE YOU GABBY
Raiul: Aggression lvl 10- very dangerous will hunt humans, very hard to kill.
Raiul: Lions are not the only indigenous big cat that roams the outer lands of Nova. To the un-initiated, Raiul do rather resemble lions... at least from a safe distance. Their bodies are lion-shaped, and covered in thin, rubbery, pale golden-yellow scales that lay flat along their bodies like a reptiles. Their faces are narrow and catty, with massive brown eyes, somewhat resembling those of a bush baby. Their claws are jet black and wicked sharp, as are their two rows of fangs. On the back of a Raiul is a set of medium size, bat-like wings; they do look rather ridiculous, and are incapable of flight, so it's easy to laugh, but these wings are actually covered in minute holes -- one flap releases a neurotoxin that it uses to stun its prey. Magic does not work on them and poison has no effect either. Only the Raiul are capable of surviving any dosage of this neurotoxin, however, antidotes do exist but are hard to come by.
Raiul Hunters spend their entire lives collecting the neurotoxin from the strange beasts. The Raiul's poison can be bought in the market along with the antidote, however, both are extremely hard to come across -- people willing to collect the neurotoxin are rather low, for obvious reasons. ).
Sesuul: Aggression lvl 1
Sesuul: When Heavens pass was first being discovered, many hundreds of years ago, the people who made the dangerous trip up the rocky mountain face that would later be carved out for a much easier climb , were somewhat bemused. Lurking in the rocks were the usual mountain-dwellers -- insects, birds and the like -- but there, skulking around everywhere, were huge raccoons, the likes of which nobody had ever seen before. They were on average five and a half feet tall, and incredibly friendly to the people who offered them fruit or bread. No one knows who came up with the idea, however, with it being impossible to get horses up and down the treacherous cliff face, someone had the bright idea to tame these raccoons to be ridable. Highly dexterous, agile and strong; Sesuul’s became perfect mounts for the dangerous mountains of Heaven Pass. Though nowadays, only farmers and travelers prefer to use Sesuuls for transportation; sense within the city their presence are not as common.
Sloziles: Aggression Lvl 2
Sloziles: Sloziles are like a mix between a sloth, a lizard, and an armadillo. They have tough leathery armor like skin with moss often growing from it. Their bodies are built like sloths and they often spend the majority of their lives up in the canopy. Their head is lizard like with a long tongue often used for eating bugs that are climbing along the bark.
They are large about the size of a horse, and very slow moving.
Aquatic:
Hydra: Aggression lvl 10
Hydra: Hydra’s are a type of water based drake with multiple heads. Even though they lack wings; these drakes are classified under the western style due to their body type. Hydra’s live in both fresh water and salt water and are amphibious. They often shoot scalding water at their prey and are highly aggressive. All hydra’s are considered a large drake; easily with the body size of an elephant. Often they look larger due to their long necks and multiple heads.
Kelpie: Aggression lvl 10
Kelpie: Kelpies favorite prey are humans; however they will eat fish. These creatures are found in lakes and swamps. Out of water they appear to be large horses, the main difference being that their mane and tail appear to be long stringy watery plants. This helps them camouflage themselves in weedy areas once under water. Their teeth are also pointed like that of most carnivores. They like luring their prey in and or ambushing people along the shore.
Kraken: Aggression lvl 7 – It will destroy you if you’re in its territory. But it will not hunt you, this guy just has a bad rep.
Kraken: Very few people have not heard of this legendary beast; this large animal lives deep within ocean trenches. Very rarely ever coming close to the surface. Krakens are gigantic squid like creatures; extremely intelligent and often very old. Kraken's when they are first born are not much larger than a human being. Often these creatures are caught and eaten just like their normal squid cousins. However after a few centuries these squid can grow to immense sizes. Once this size they are very territorial and will often eat their young if they stay around. The larger the squid the larger the territory. A good indicator that you’re in Kraken territory is if you come across a large whirl pool; often they suck down there prey to the deep depths of the ocean.
Selkie: Aggression lvl 3
Selkie: Selkies are like a mix of mer folk and sea lions; these beasts are sea lions that can take on a humanoid appearance by removing their lion skin. Often you can tell a Selkie in human form by there large round black eyes. These creatures are protected by law, due to the fact if their skin is taken from them they have to fallow that persons orders and they no longer can return back to the sea. If you are discovered hording a selkie skin you can and will be punished by the law.
Air:
Drakes: Aggression lvl 8
Drakes: There are several species of drake; the most known are probably the Palico drakes which are more dragonoid in appearance. Nova sports its own species of drakes as well, such as the Black Scale drake. Drakes are beasts; due to their intelligence levels being close to that of a very intelligent dog. They do not grow to immense sizes, the largest species of drake only growing to the size of a small elephant. Like dragons they can be separated into three body types, the western, eastern, and wyvern types. Western drakes will always have four legs, a more muscular body type, and often a set of wings. These are the most common type of drakes and are prized by the Palico Army. Eastern Drakes are long and snake like, using manna to fly. These drakes do not sport any wings what so ever. Wyverns are drakes which have two hind legs and bat like wings that act as there forearms.
Morgites: Aggression lvl 8- they are definitely going to bite you.
Morgites: better hope you never come across a group of these fuckers. They are like Zeapons little present to Mylee and Caster. These flying blood sucking insects are about 3 inches long and to those who can see them they are sickly yellow in color. They are only visible to magic users and very dangerous to anyone they happen to take a meal from. Not only will you become anemic you’ll have severe flu like symptoms for three days. These symptoms can spread to those around you as well. These guys certainly give a new meaning to flu bug.
Lochs: Aggression lvl 3- will defend itself if it needs to
Lochs: Lochs are what you’d expect a unicorn to be; they have a horses body; hooves like a goat; and a tail like a lion. Their horn however is shaped like a reindeers; with multiple sharp points. The horn is extremely poisonous; it is often the main ingredient in kings bane. Lochs come in a variety of natural colors and can be found closer to the mountainous side of the forever forest. These beasts are protected under Nova law and are illegal to hunt and or own any part of.
Peryton: Aggression lvl 1- These guys are more skittish then harmful
Peryton: A Peryton is a winged deer; only found deep in the forever forest. These sweet guys boast colorful feathers on their wings and tail. They are very skittish and usually travel in a flock; often these colorful beasts will take flight at the first sound of an approach. They do not do well in captivity especially if separated from their flock; often if this happens they will expire within a week or two. There feathers are often collected during the spring molt and are excellent writing quills and are thought to be good luck for exams.
Phoenix: Aggression lvl 3- will run away before it will attack.
Phoenix: Are extremely rare, one may never see one in their lifetime. These extremely long lived creatures are considered immortal; however that is not true. It is thought that they are because they will go through a life cycle numerous times before its actual demise. These birds have a long swan like neck, with a raptor like birds head, a massive wing span, and a tail that resembles a peacocks in structure. The birds are always a dark red mixed with gold. As a defense mechanism these birds can cover themselves in flames; and in extreme cases teleport themselves into a new location. It is known that a phoenix’s call can strike fear into the wicked and empower the good; and there tears have strong healing properties rivaling that of lunar flowers, just without the trip.
Beasts found in Palico
Palico is a very rocky hostile terrain; out of the three kingdoms it probably hosts the least variety of animals within its borders. However there are certainly plenty to find.
Land:
Crocotta: Aggression lvl 8- It hunts what it can get; but is easily intimidated.
Crocotta: Crocotta are mostly dogs in nature; however the largest difference is they have goat like feet specifically designed for hopping along the rocky mountainous region of Palico. They hunt in packs and mostly feed on mountain goats. However they have been known to take down a stray traveler if the opportunity presents itself.
Spraken: Aggression lvl 4
Spraken: Sprakens are a small annoying beast that inhabit the forest north of Palico. These annoying little creatures are nocturnal and are the bane of a woodsmen. These creatures run in large packs, usually twelve to thirteen. They are about the size of a domestic cat and have the scrawny body of a fox, sharp needle like claws, black feather like fur, and the head of a crow. If the crow head isn’t creepy enough, Sprakens have eight glowing red eyes, which see in infrared. They often will bring down prey much larger than them, due to a method of swarming. They hate bright lights; so you will not see them out during the day and are easily warded off by fire.
Torouka: Aggression lvl 3
Torouka: Torouka live in the plains north of Palico; they thrive in the cooler climates that the mountains bring. These large creatures stand nine feet at the shoulder and look like a cross between a buffalo and a moose. There hide is extremely thick and their bodies muscular. The males have three large antlers; two moose like antlers on the bottom of their jaws; and one large disk like antler. Often these beasts are prized for their one large antler that makes a wonderful chair as it can sit a large adult comfortably. These beasts are often hunted and bread for their meat, think if as the cow of Palico.
Urulóki: Aggression lvl 7
Urulóki: Urulóki are a species of canines that inhabit the more volcanic regions of Heavens pass. They are larger than common wolves, however smaller then dire wolves and gorge hounds. There smaller size allows them to fit through smaller crevices in their rocky terrain. There paws are larger than average, allowing them to distribute their weight more evenly on unstable surfaces. Thick shaggy fire proof fur cover their entire bodies. Their fur thickens around its neck creating a mane of fur, the shaggy fur also extends further on its legs and feet. Providing protection from the extreme heat that they call home. Its ears much like their cousin the gorge hounds are large for their head; however they lack the size of a gorge hound and the elongated snout. But perhaps the most distinguishable feature of a Urulóki would be the two massive draconic horns that rest on top of their head.
The Urulóki are primarily scavengers, however they have been known to occasionally group into a small pack to take down large prey when food is scarce. The Urulóki are believed to have bred with the occasional elemental fox; due to the fact of having the ability to breathe fire. This is a form of manna manipulation and used primarily as a defense. Too many uses can lead to manna corruption.
Aquatic:
Angler Eel: Aggression lvl 5
Angler Eel: Angler Eels reside in the deeper lakes of Palico, using a bioluminescent bulb hanging off of their heads to attract prey. These eels are about size feet in length and have tentacle like appendages coming off of their face. They have six large black eyes, and long dagger like teeth. These Eels usually keep to themselves unless a nest is disturbed. Often these disturbances come from fishing boats dropping anchors.
Fire Toad: Aggression lvl 0
Fire Toad: Fire toads are bioluminescent frogs that are primarily black with red and orange streaks glowing throughout its body. Fire toads coat their skin in a fire resistant mucus; a prime ingredients in fire resistant potions. Normally these frogs are found in marshy areas in large numbers; but they only procreate during large field fires. Hence the reason they have that fire resistant mucus.
Air:
Griffin: Aggression lvl 7- It will attack but it will not hunt you.
Griffin: Griffins are characterized by having a bird head and front talons, wings, and the back half of a lion. Although the eagle head griffin is the most common, griffins can resemble a number of bird of prey types. My personal favorite is an Owl Head Griffin; so adorable! Griffins themselves are carnivores; and highly intelligent. They understand the intricacy of human settlements and often stay there distance. Only time they would take human livestock is during the breeding season, and only if necessary. These beasts often mate for life, when their mate dies often the other soon fallows. An interesting fact is the magical property of their feathers. It is impossible to lie in the presence of a griffin; this effect is lost if the feather falls off the griffin. However these feathers still make amazing arrow fletching’s; often flying more accurately then normal fletching’s.
Hippogriff: Aggression lvl 5- less likely to attack then a griffin
Hippogriff: These beasts came about when a number of griffins decided to procreate with horses; why one may never know. Hippogriffs have the mind of an animal; no more intelligent than your average horse. They have the head and talons of a bird, and the back half of the horse. They are hard to tame, and travel in herds. Smaller then horses, but able to transverse the rocky cliff sides well. Though they often feed in fields. These animals are both meat and grain eaters.
Beasts found in Kanto
Kanto has a tropical to dessert like climate; it hosts a variety of animals.
Land:
Peacats: Aggression lvl 4- usually only aggressive to animals smaller than them or if provoked.
Peacats: Peacats are only slightly larger than a domestic cat species; they are easily identified by their gorgeous colors that strongly resemble a peacocks. Usually these cats have dark blue fur, with lynx like tuffs upon there large triangular ears. Slowly down there back the fur turns into feathers, the tail of a peacat being exactly like a male peacocks. These cats are often owned by nobles in Kanto and are considered a very expensive breed of cat.
Sphinx: Aggression lvl 9- these shitters will try to kill you
Sphinx: Sphinx have the body of a lion and the head of a human, and above average intelligence. They consume human flesh and can live months without a single meal. Often waiting for a human to come across their path. These beasts love to play with their food, often making them play games before finishing them off. Often the human head misleads humans into trying to reason with the beast; which usually is their downfall. These beasts are not friendly!
Aquatic:
Hippocampus Sea horse: Aggression lvl 0
Hippocampus Sea Horse: These sea horses have the head of a horse and a tail like a dolphin. These a friendly creatures that live in warm tropical waters. They often are used to pull small water crafts along the coast.
Kantonese Sucker Pod: Aggression lvl 2- Safe for the Most part
Kantonese Sucker Pod: This four legged octopus grows no larger than a foot; however, rare and odd these creatures breathe Co2, which they extract by attaching themselves to living - breathing - creatures or objects that produce out Co2. The Kantonese Sucker has also been known to take this Co2 and convert it into oxygen; which the Kanto residents have discovered and used for years. Kanto clam divers often attach one of these suckers to their face; in order for them to dive such deep depths for long periods of time without going up so often for air.
Sea Serpent: Aggression lvl 8
Sea Serpent: Sea serpents are gigantic water like snakes; technically they can be considered an eastern breed of dragon due to their immense size. These creatures are purely aquatic, and have long snake like bodies with flowing fish like fins. They have large spiny dorsal fins that travel the majority of their body. They are arguably one of the more beautiful sea creatures due to their bioluminescent qualities. Their magical abilities include making an electric charge around there body, as well as being able to blast large streams of scalding hot water.
Air:
Winged Horses: Aggression lvl 0
Winged horses: Winged horses are a prize in Kanto; horses like these often live in herds and are often floating along the warm thermals over the sea and dessert. They are skittish in nature and spook easily; but they are often playful as well. It is not an odd site to see them chasing each other and frolicking through the air. There is a sub species of winged horse that is aggressive, often you can distinguish the types by their wings. The herbivore species have feather like wings while the aggressive carnivorous species have bat like wings.
Chimera: Aggression lvl 10
Chimera: Chimera’s are large beasts slightly larger than your average horse. They have three heads, a lions, a goats, and a snakes. They are consistently at war with each other, and there behavior is erratic at best.
Thunder Bird: Aggression lvl 4
Thunder Birds: These are immense birds of prey, and they only fly during thunder storms. They reside on high plateaus in the tropical area of Kanto. Often dark blue to black in color they are almost always surrounded by a rain clouds. A strong charge of electricity also surrounds them, making them very difficult to approach. Often mages sneak caster sorrow shards into their nests in order to create storm gems. This bird is about the size of a large dog.
Flying Monkeys: Aggression lvl 4- just don’t make them angry.
Flying Monkeys: Flying monkeys reside in the tropical jungles of Kanto, these primates look exactly how their name sounds. Their monkeys with wings. Flying monkeys act much like there none winged primates, and come in a variety of species. However flying monkeys cannot fly, but they can glide. These primates are a little less intelligent then normal primates, however certainly more mobile.
