Biography
History: The eldest surviving child of his family, Xenos E D'vuleath was born in a small seaside village, to the east of the Forever Forest. His father, who ran a small village shop, was a native of the Nova kingdom, but his mother came from a country far across the Widow Maker Sea. Although she had fled due to war, she remained proud of her language and culture, and tried to instil a similar pride in her children. Xenos and has siblings grew up bilingual. The children were fortunate enough to receive an education, albeit one that the upper classes' standards would deem simplistic. Xenos and his siblings learned the language of Nova, arithmetic and business from their father. Xenos' mother taught her children her own language, as well as how to read and write. As a teenager, Xenos decided to leave the village for the city of Nova. He found work in a large mansion. He worked hard but, as was the case with all the lower-ranking staff, received no acknowledgement of his efforts. Xenos, exhausted, may well have headed home at that point, but two things stopped him; pride and the mansion's extensive but underused library. Xenos, never the most social person, began to totally shun social events in favour of reading. Often, he read long into the night, covering a broad range of topics, from philosophy to physics to the curious fiction of the upper classes. However, Xenos found himself repeatedly returning to languages. He taught himself two new languages, one resembling French, the other Irish, as well as educating himself on the intricacies of the common tongue. However, Xenos' restless nights began to impact on his performance, and a fellow servant soon reported that Xenos was sneaking off to the library and handling the books. Xenos was dismissed without a reference, and a warning that, if he returned, he would be reported to the guards for theft. As if anyone could steal knowledge!
After losing his job, Xenos resolved to get a new one. He didn't want to crawl back home and admit his failure. Xenos' seaside upbringing stood by him in the port, where he got a job on a cargo vessel. The pay was bad, as was the ship- Xenos suspected that the boat wasn't capable of crossing the port, let alone traverse the Widowmaker Sea. His suspicions proved correct, but the vessel's utter lack of seaworthiness didn't become apparent to its intoxicated captain until the fatefully stormy night, when it began to sink. Thankfully, Xenos was able to cling stubbornly to a section of flotsam. He was dragged away by the current and floated for hours, trapped between tiredness and fear. As the sun's course was nearing its end, he was washed towards a shoreline. Xenos raced out of the water onto a strange, shingle bay and, while shivering, wondered where he was. Reasoning that there was only one way to find out, Xenos dragged himself off the shingle and made his way towards the road and the village beyond. He was initially met with hostility. The villagers were wary of newcomers, especially those who arrived on their shores as though they had sprung from the sea itself. However, Xenos quickly realised that these people spoke his mother's language. He explained his story, and answered the villagers' questions. He asked them if they had known his mother, or her family, but they hadn't heard of her. Xenos was told that there were many such villages scattered along the coast, through the lowlands and even in the foothills of the whitecapped mountains, and his mother could have come from any of them. Once the villagers had gained a little trust in Xenos, he discovered them to be quite hospitable. Having been employed in a house before, he found it easy to apply his skills to work in a hotel, which mainly catered to visitors from the city of Zlenvoda. During that summer, Xenos improved his language skills immensely. However, as autumn drew near, Xenos and many other staff were let go by the hotel. Xenos was initially confused, but his colleagues informed him that the transition of workers from the village, to the city, and back again, was a common cycle among the youth. They invited him to come to the city with him but, although they all arrived in Zlenvoda, Xenos and the others soon parted ways. They had college life to return to, while Xenos searched desperately for work. He eventually found employment as a translator for a company that exported and imported goods across the Widowmaker Sea. It was the first time that Xenos truly had the opportunity to use his multilingualism in a job, and he loved it. He started saving a little and, some evenings, he would attend language classes run by a university student. Xenos embraced yet another language, Latin, and began saving up in order to enter college. However, he was never to make it to such heights. A fellow at his work, who saw Xenos' skill and diligence as a translator as a threat to his chances of promotion, spread false information about Xenos, leaving documents around that Xenos had been shipwrecked while working for a pirate ship, and was staying in Zlenvoda on account of being a wanted man in Nova. Although Xenos' employers had their doubts about the legitimacy of the accusing documents, the press and the city gossips were having a field day with the ironic rumour that one of the country's most prestigious trading companies could be employing a pirate. Xenos' job and reputation was of far less worth than the losses the company was making due to the escalating scandal. Once again, Xenos found himself unemployed. He tried hard to get work in a myriad variety of places, but he was constantly refused. Eventually, Xenos spent most of his hard-earned savings on a one-way trip back to Nova, this time on a seaworthy ship.
Xenos has been in the capital a few days now. Although accustomed to working as a servant, he would prefer to work as a translator or a language tutor, at least until he can fulfill his personal dream of opening a language school, a school where knowledge is available to everyone.
