Grom Grantiteshield
" We pay all debts and settle all grudges. It is the Dwarven way!"
Nicknames: Old Greybeard, The Stonebreaker Age: 300 Gender: Male Race: Dwarf Origin: Nova Role: High King of the Dwarves |
Character Traits
Hair Color/Style: Grom's hair is greyed with age, and carefully woven into an intertwining braid, though he will often change the style to fit various occasions. It is often adorned with gold beard rings and jewelry, a symbol of his status, wealth, and power, his favorite being rubies.
Eye color: Blue
Skin Color: Light
Body Type: Like most dwarves, Grom is short and stocky, and muscular to boot, being much stronger then even most men due to the nature of his race.
Clothing - Detailed Appearance: Grom is usually seen decked out in full red and black plate mail armor with an ornate design modeled by the best dwarven smiths. Both decorative and practical, the shoulder plates are modeled to look like the ancient dwarven High Kings of old so that they may protect him in battle. The chest plate features a mural of the first dwarf and father of all dwarves, Volmar Forgefather, at his forge with the volcanic mountain of Morgg behind him. A crown almost always adorns his head, keeping his hair out of his eyes, and is wrought from gold and silver with several carefully cut gemstones decorating it all over. The only time he forsakes his crown is when he marches to combat, and is replaced with the royal helm, a horned helmet that is a fiery red, making him stand out to both his enemies and allies, inspiring fear in his enemies and courage in his allies.
Personality: Grom is a dwarf of many layers and a long and storied life. His experiences have made him a blunt individual who does not mince words or niceties, instead preferring to get straight to the point. He does not tolerate fools or trouble makers lightly, and is not afraid to use his station and power to put them in their place quickly, be they noble or commoner. He tends to come off as arrogant to many who meet him, though he is quick to recognize and compliment the talents of others, whether they be friend or foe. He can be quick to anger, but is level headed enough not to do anything rash that would compromise his integrity or composure without at least a fair level of provocation. When he IS angered, his fury is like an erupting volcano, loud and destructive, potentially claiming all in front of him. He is also quite sociable, able to hold conversations with a variety of peoples (preferably over a pint of fine dwarven ale). He can be slow to warm up, however, as he is distrustful of most humans due to the many battles and wars he has been in involving their kind. Also, much like the rest of his kind, he strongly believes in the dwarven pantheon of gods, and is serious about two things: always making sure his debts are paid...and always settling a grudge.
Likes: Dwarven Ale, Gold, Gems, His Beard
Dislikes: Fools, Crooks, Loudmouthed weaklings, the idea of shaving

Combat & Inventory
Abilities:
Battlefield Tactician: Having fought in numerous campaigns, both as a general and as a High King, Grom knows how to quickly adapt and make his troops comply. He is also one to think ahead when it comes to the battlefield, and knows how to wage and win wars.
Multiple Weapon Mastery: Grom is one of the oldest, if not THE oldest living of the dwarf rae in Nova, and has seen his fair share of battles. He can use almost any weapon with ease, or quickly learn how new ones work, though he tends to favor his ax.
Combat:
Master of the Ax: Grom is known far and wide for his ability to wield his famed ax Mountain's Retribution, felling foes in battle like they were trees before a lumberjack. Though not a graceful fighter, Grom is efficient and ruthless, applying both technique and raw power into every blow and every swing.
Expert Brawler: Enemies should beware the might High King of the Dwarves; in the extremely unlikely event that he is unarmed, the old ruler is no slouch with his fists. Having been in many battles and bar fights in his long life, he has developed a style all his own, a mix of powerful punches and grappling throws that subdue his opponents.
Crossbowman: Though Grom prefers to fight face to face, even he knows the value of ranged combat. He always carries a compact crossbow with him, allowing him to hunt...or to defend himself from a distance.
Throwing Weapons: Carrying at least two throwing axes at his belt, Grom usually use these on targets that are too far away for melee combat, or targets that he cannot shoot with a crossbow (usually because it would take too long to string it and reload)

- Mountain's Retribution: This enchanted ax was given to Grom many years before he became the High King upon his entry into the Runeguard, as is custom it was enchanted with a powerful ability. The mount for this double headed battle ax is an ornate volcano design, with two dragon heads with open mouths where the blades are mounted. Several runes are inscribed into the metal, which glow bright when wielded in battle. Aside from never growing dull, this battle axe has a special activated ability that allows it to spew forth fiery magma like a flamethrower that has up to a fifty foot range for five seconds (this can only be done once per thread)
- Crossbow and Quiver: While not his main weapon of choice, Grom will use a compact crossbow with strong armor piercing bolts if forced to engage in ranged combat.
- Throwing Axes: Grom carries two single headed throwing hatchets on his belt, handy when he needs to hit fleeing targets, or cannot use his crossbow on an enemy not yet in range for a melee strike.
Biography
History: Grom Graniteshield is one of the oldest dwarves alive, a living relic of several generations past; he has lived long enough to see the once proud, strong, and powerful Dwarven empire be reduced to the shadow of what it once was. Born into a noble family known for producing fine warriors, Grom turned out to be a naturally talented fighter, bright and insightful, and a born leader of men, excelling at leading from the front. War ax in hand, he would urge his kin forward, leaving piles of enemy dead in his wake. This talent did not go unnoticed, and he was eventually inducted into the Runeguard, the personal elite of the Dwarven armies, each of whom wield powerful ruinic weapons and enchanted armor. In such a post, Grom was given plenty of chances to rise even higher in the ranks, and was greatly loved by the dwarves that served under him, as well as the people of his nation.
Being in the higher ranks did not come with it's downsides, however. The nobles and royals constantly plotted against one another for power, some using any means necessary to achieve their goals. Things got much worse when the High King at the time passed away due to an illness, rumored to be poisoned by one or both of his sons. The two sons quickly became involved in a bitter power struggle to claim the throne for themselves, while the people were unhappy and the hold fell into chaos. Once the violence started to escalate and involve the common folk, Grom had had enough. Taking advantage of his ability to lead, he gathered what troops were loyal to him, several of which had been serving under him for years, and lead one of the most violent coup de tats in the history of the Kingdom, openly challenging both factions on the fields of battle. Despite the fact that both royals had more resources then Grom's army, the two sides could not cease their bickering and unite their forces, instead trying to fight one another while also fighting Grom. With Grom leading from the front lines like he always did, he was able to defeat both armies, personally slaying both heirs.
Once his position was solidified and Grom took to the throne and went to work establishing peace, quickly quelling any infighting by ruling with a stern and iron fist, tolerating no insubordination or infractions. For a time, peace reigned under Grom; despite having a warrior's heart, he was an effective ruler that dealt in in absolutes, he listened to what people of all ranks had to say, and made great strides toward improving the lives of his people, from the layman to the noble. Though he was met with opposition from various nobles in the court his unorthodox methods, he was not challenged, as many feared and respected him....and every assassin that was sent his way ended up dead, usually by his own hand.
Sadly, the years of peace came to an end when the Great Dividing War occurred. When the three kingdoms of Nova, Kanto, and Palico went to war with one another, the dwarves were dragged into the war when Palico and Nova tried to use Heaven's Pass to traverse troops and fight their battles, disrupting many trade routes between dwarven settlements, even demanding free passage...and for Grom to choose a side in the war or be attacked. Grom, not swayed or deterred, refused, and declared war on both Palico and Nova, mustering the might of the dwarven empire and marching upon them both. This would prove near fatal for the dwarves; though they won several encounters, with each bloody battle, the casualties were high...and other races, such as orcs, the Forsaken Elves, and various other creatures normally kept in check by the dwarves ran rampant, and nearly all the settlements and strongholds in the pass were lost. When peace finally came, all that remained was the capital and Khazlud Volmar...and a very angry, if not tired and battered dwarven army.
Over the years, Grom and his race have had time to lick their wounds, and slowly, the dwarves have grown in numbers, the younger generation raised on tales of valor, splendor, and glory of the old days from the few old dwarves left. They dream of restoring their former glory once more, and Grom Graniteshield himself is more eager then any of them. Many in his court push for war against Nova to right the wrongs of the past, while other encourage friendship....but only Grom can decide for sure which course to take, for he is High King of the Mountain Realms!
