Roland sits in the anti magic stone cell, he looks at the shackles which prevent him from using magic and then at the walls around him which prevent him even further. He had to admit, while he was not expecting a welcoming return he had not expected to be thrown in the dungeon.
Well not much for it I suppose. He admits to himself as he lays back and contemplates the situation he was in. Garza was a good man and he could trust him to take care of Aveline...he thinks about his wife and reaches down to play the memory ring that had been taken from him. Of everything this was the object he missed the most, it had been a reminder what he had made this choice for and even with everything that had happened he found himself smiling.
Well Aveline can take care of things if worse comes to worse...I'm sad that I won't be there for her, but as long as she's carrying the kid it'll prevent her from doing something reckless. He assures himself. Roland did not really fear death, it was admittedly something that he would prefer to prevent, but he had always been ready for it. After all the world had always been a harsh and unfair place.
Roland finds himself humming a tune as he sits in the cell waiting for judgement, it was the hymn of Caster, his goddess.

“You’ve been gone for so long, Roland.” The voice that drifts from the darkness is familiar, but not in the way Roland might have hoped. The woman that sweeps down the steps in a bundle of heavy brocaded fabric and furs that somehow sloped into sharp angles at her shoulders and hips was not his mother, but someone completely unwelcome here.
Severine stared down at Roland, dark eyes rimmed with kohl and arms folded, her head for once uncovered, showing her closely cropped tightly curling black hair. She tilted her head down at him- even in the faint light it was obvious that in his brief absence she had aged. From worry for her kidnapped daughter, it was rumored by the courtiers- while her hair was spared from the touch of silver many others her age had, deep lines had begun to form around her eyes and mouth that not even makeup could hide. The woman could only stare at Roland for a moment before she began to speak again, her voice quiet, tinged with steel just under the surface.
“You are the same age as my eldest, you know. Jean, but I’m sure my daughter has told you everything about our family.” Severine’s eyes narrowed as she leaned forward, towards the bars. “Tell me, did you put your bastard child into my daughter’s belly before or after you tricked her into running away with you? Or maybe that was the incentive for marriage, spare her the humiliation of carrying your bastard child to term?”

Roland looks up as the voice drifts over to him, well it was about time he supposed. He had been wondering when Severine was going to get here to taunt. Roland simply tilted his head upon seeing her. There was no use being angry, he knew the risks of returning, but this was something that needed to be done. Roland had oaths to keep and even if circumstances had conspired to make it look like he'd broken his what truly mattered was that when Zepon appeared to collect his dues Roland would know he'd upheld all he'd sworn to do to the best of his ability.
He fiddled with his collar and ring, the ring held no combative properties, the mages had checked it over and allowed him to keep it. Occasionally he would retreat into the memories stored within it, the memories of the last three months and sometimes...well there were other pleasant memories.
As Roland looked up and locked eyes with Severine his eyes were a shining silver, a color that made him look even more inhuman than the amethyst of before. "I proposed before we consummated, and I did not trick Ave into anything." He replies simply, there was not really much more to say despite the situation Roland simply leaned back against the wall with a neutral expression.

“You consummated nothing.” The word spat from Severine’s mouth, true rage behind the word. “Do you honestly think that someone as pure and beautiful as my Aveline would ever willingly love someone as haggard and simple as you?”
The woman leaned forward, long and bony fingers curling around the bars of the cell. “Was it my money you were after? Her connections? She would have been Queen if not for you. Did you truly hate me that much, Roland? Enough to enchant my youngest daughter into your bed?”
Her eyes narrowed at Roland, dark even in the dim light. “Do not speak to me of your great love for her. Any feeling you may have had was lust alone. And she would have not loved you back. She barely knew you before you swept her away. Even when I tried to stop you you still stole her away. You were gone for months, Roland. Did you honestly think there would be no consequences for you? You ruined my daughter with your enchantments.”

"Severine, I do not hate you...I do not like you, and I cannot forgive you for what YOU did to Ave, but you are just someone playing for power. You're just a better criminal than most." He replies simply as he closes his eyes, in a lot of ways the advisor was the one who looked more like the animal that should be caged in this exchange.
After a few seconds Roland rolls his head back down to meet Severine's eyes again. "Though I am curious why you think I would imagine this marriage would help my politically or financially, I have no need of a dowry, and to be honest I already had all the relevant connections I needed to do my job." He points out as his neutral expression turns into a frown.
"For someone who can read others so well, you never really have been very good with me have you?" He points out then gets to his feet playing with his ring a bit more.
"I love your daughter, this is not a flight of fancy or lust. And I did not influence your daughter's mind magically, I do not know such a spell." He states and the words carried power, though to someone who was not magically attuned there would be no notice.

“I have given my daughter a life beyond what her station would entail for her. You will never love my daughter the way that I do. She is everything to me, and you will rue the day you stole her from me with your enchantments.” Severine’s fingers flex against the bars, eyes fixed on him as the rage bleeds from her voice into a cool and calculating cadance.
“I won’t deny that perhaps you feel something for my daughter that may creep beyond lust, I can assure you entirely that whatever my daughter has done to made you believe that she loves you was made under duress. My daughter is a clever girl and she will do whatever it takes to survive. Even if it means submitting her body to your base and cruel urges to do so. Every touch, every kiss you pulled from her was torn from a wince, from a tremor of fear, of knowing that being with you is wrong on a level that digs at her very spirit. My daughter was not made for someone as cruel and ugly as you and now that you are here your spell over her will soon be shattered. You will not have any power over her any longer, Roland. You will never see my daughter again.”

Severine finishes her tirade Roland takes several step towards the bars, he was still out of arms reach for either of them, but he was at her eye level again, his mass of dark curls spread out in a bush to make him look disheveled. "Mother in law, I am many things, strict, unyielding, stubborn, among some of my more obvious faults, but you are the one who is cruel, not I." He says in a tone near a whisper.
"As I mentioned, I have laid no compulsion on your daughter, what she has done has been her own will, not that you will believe me." He takes another step forward so that he is within arms reach for both of them.
"And I would never trade Aveline to anyone she feared for personal gain, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for you. In pressuring her to be queen you only wished unhappiness upon her." Then Roland crossed his arms in front of himself.
"So tell me mother in law, what has brought you here, are you merely here to spit venom? Or did you actually have something you wished to either ask or say?"

Severine does not budge from her spot at the bars, but her mouth does turn in a snarl at the sight of Roland in better light. “You do not have the right to call me by that title, you are not my son.” her eyes flicker over his hair and face, the snarl growing more pronounced the more she looks at him. His visage was ugly, even more so covered in hair. Any child born of her daughter from this man would be hideous.
She would have to remedy that.
“There is no will when it comes to you, Roland Walker. No woman would ever willingly go with you. No woman would ever follow a man like you for the rest of her days. No woman would lower herself in that way willingly to share your bed and bear your children.” Severine leans in forward, head nearly between the bars.
“My daughter would have been the perfect queen. And you know that. She is gentle and wise, and the people would have adored her. You stole that chance from her, the chance to be worshiped, to be written of in songs and stories. You saddled her with shame and scorn and a bastard. Your bastard. I came to ask you what gave you the right to sully my daughter with your hands?”

Roland looked couldn't help but nod at Severine's comments about Aveline as queen. "Ave, would have indeed been an excellent queen, except for the fact that the king terrifies her." He acknowledges as he twists the crystal ring on his finger.
As Severine begins to list off all the things a woman would never do Roland's brow furrows slightly. "I do not care about these hypothetical women you are talking about. I did not care about relationships before I met Aveline and I will not care about them for anyone aside from her."
"But know this Severine, the right to touch Aveline was given to me by the only person with the right to give it, Aveline herself. Free of coercion and of her own free will."

“She would have loved him, as is expected of a wife.” Severine’s mouth twists into a form like a smile. “Well, we can agree on one thing then. That my daughter would have been better off without you.” she tilts her head, laughing and shaking her head.
“You mean that you want me to believe that you had no eyes for any woman before my daughter? Those are not good odds in your favor, Roland Walker. What odds can you believe that the first woman you fall in love with after over thirty winters and summers that you have seen is the daughter of the woman you despise? That is almost a story, if you were not you.”
Severine smile pulls crueler at Roland’s last words. “Continue to feed yourself that lie, Roland Walker. We will see what she says at your trial.”

Listening to the taunts Roland walks away from the bars and leans back against the wall. "There is not much of a point in talking to you further. Regardless of what we say neither will change their mind or stance." Roland's eyes return to their normal shade of dark brown.
"I suppose we will need to wait for the trial to find out," He says before closing his eyesand laying back against the wall.

Severine shakes her head, withdrawing slightly from the bars. “Chains look good on you, Roland Walker.” she smiles, but there’s no joy there. “But do not hold your breath. You will soon be relieved of your burdens. His Majesty is most gracious after all, fair and wise. I’m sure that not even you will be able to object to his order for what you have done to my daughter.”
Severine pulls her hands back, remaining close. “So you have nothing more to say to me? No words for me to carry back to my daughter or to your former subordinates? No last requests?”

Roland looked at the chains and shrugged. "To be honest I do not notice much of a difference."
When she asks about his final words he smiled at her "Would you swear an oath to me to say it true?" He asks, his eyes turning silver.
